Hyaluronic acid is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix (non-cellular matter between the cells in the tissue); it fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers. It also makes an important contribution to cell division and migration of skin cells to the skin surface, it promotes fibroblast activity and ensures that essential nutrients are transported from the blood to the living skin cells. However, its most important feature is that it can attract and retain moisture up to 1000 times its own weight. This ensures optimal hydration, maintenance of dermal and epidermal elasticity and more volume in the skin; the effect that fine lines are filled from within. In addition, hyaluronic acid stimulates the skin's own production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). They also play a key role in retaining moisture in the skin and stimulating collagen production. A deficiency of GAGs accelerates the aging process because it leads to loss of collagen and elasticity.
Amino acids are the building blocks of literally everything in the human body, including the skin. The body can only produce healthy skin cells, collagen and elastin, if it has sufficient amino acids.
